Mariya and Joseph Marx held their wedding mass on January 23rd, 2021 at Sts. Mary & John Parish. It was a whirlwind making their wedding dreams come true, but such an incredible story to witness! Mariya found me online in June of 2019 and we quickly connected. She and Joseph were supposed to get married June 20th, 2020 at a beautiful venue in Newburgh. However, when the pandemic happened, Mariya was stuck in Russia because of travel restrictions; they had to postpone their wedding indefinitely. Then, January 8th, 2021, I received an email from her – “I made it to Indiana & we’re getting married! How does the 23rd sound?” Heck yes!
Mariya and Joseph are both super intentional with their faith, and wanted that to be the focus of the day. They were surrounded by only Joseph’s immediate family, and they live-streamed it to Mariya’s family back in Russia. The whole day was super intimate and beautiful. It was an honor to witness their love for one another in such an ornate cathedral.
Mariya shared the story with me of how they met during our email correspondence. In 2017, she found out she was going to USI for the spring semester of 2018. So she went on VK (Russian facebook) to look for other Russians that live in Evansville, so she could know someone when she moved. That’s where she found Joseph.
After he added her they immediately became interested in each other. Mariya shared that there was a very strong connection between the two of them and they were messaging every day! It didn’t take long and they were in love! They talked for 7 months before she came to the US and they spent a whole semester together; Mariya said, “It was the best 4 months of my life!”
When her program ended though, she had to go back home. At that point they were only seeing each other in person every 4-6 months. In March of 2020, Joseph went to visit Mariya and meet her family. That very first night he visited, he proposed! Incredible! Mariya said, “I know I am a little biased but I actually think that was the best proposal ever! He did it while we were praying together! And I didn’t even let him finish, I just jumped on him and started crying.” What a breathtaking story of love and devotion.
